LOOKING FOR LIGHTHOUSES:  o4/01/10 thru 10/31/10

Come to the Captain’s and we’ll map out a one or two day lighthouse excursion that will take you 25 miles to the east and 25 miles to the west of Huron. We will provide you with maps and suggestions for places to stop along the way. Of course, Huron has its very own lighthouse called the Huron Harbor Pierhead Light . . . and it’s just a short walk from the Captain’s. Heading east along the lake shore, there are two others of interest; the Vermilion Lighthouse is a replica of the original and it can be viewed up close; and in Lorain, the Lorain West Breakwater Lighthouse can be viewed from the shore.

To the west of Huron just 7 miles is the newly renovated Cedar Point Lighthouse; it can be viewed up close during the summer. Driving west across Sandusky Bay on the spectacular Edison Bridge, you’ll spot the oldest, continuously lit lighthouse on all the Great Lakes, the Marblehead Lighthouse and its restored lightkeeper’s house. You may walk the grounds and view this famous lighthouse up close. Tours are offered during the summer months, although it is a limited schedule. Just west of Marblehead in Port Clinton is the Old Pt. Clinton Lighthouse. Only the top was able to be saved, but it can be viewed up close. What a nice way to while away a lazy afternoon or two—a trip that will literally light up your life!

The Captain's room rates are regular seasonal pricing for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Ask about our discount for Mondays through Thursdays.

LAKE ERIE BIRDING AT ITS VERY BEST: 04/01/10 - 10/31/10

Did you know that Lake Erie’s Coastal Ohio from Toledo on the west to Lorain on the east is one of the very best and largest birding areas in North America? Well, it is! Our Lake Erie Wing Watch areas are home to more than 300 bird species including majestic bald eagles, colorful migratory warblers, and graceful great blue herons. Our area’s birding “hot spots” cover more than 20,000 natural acres and more than 50 miles of trails to explore. Huron has the distinction of being home to four fantastic nature preserves as well as being a part of the Erie Metro Parks System. Huron also boasts a stellar Parks & Recreation Department that maintains our beautiful city parks and beaches.

The James H. McBride Arboretum is located behind BGSU Firelands College. This arboretum has a diverse spectrum of trees and shrubs. Here you can enjoy walking the paved pathways around a picturesque lake or take the woodland trail along the banks of Sawmill Creek. New walkways lead to a butterfly and humming bird garden and a peace & tranquility garden.

Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve is located on the east edge of Huron. Lake Erie and Old Woman Creek meet to form a third type of water, chemically different than both, yet attractive to a variety of flora and fauna. You may visit the indoor nature center and hike the paved trails. Telescopes are set to watch the eagles’ nests.

Sheldon Marsh is located on the west edge of the city. Surrounded by marshlands, forests, swamps, and a barrier beach, you will encounter nature at its very best. There are paved hiking trails, and bird checklists and brochures are available.

The Captain's room rates are regular season pricing for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Ask about our discount for Mondays through Thursdays.

Montague Mystery Programs

There is a legend that Capt. Montague's - being an Irish Inn - was built on a plot of enchanted earth, that there are nights here when everything is magically transformed and that even our guests become "changelings". On these nights villains stalk the halls and even the mildest guest may be a spy, an assassin - or a poisoner gone mad.

Create your very own mystery weekend

Gather your friends and/or family; you'll need 10 to 12 participants (5 or 6 couples or two people to share each guest room). It's helpful to select more than one possible date. Allow 4 to 6 weeks advance request so that we can guarantee that you and your group will occupy the entire house. Then call. That's all there is to it--easy! (these weekends are not scheduled during the months of February, March, June, July, and August)

(NOTE: Captain Montague's was voted 2nd in the nation for our unique mystery weekends)

A Mystery at the Captain's

Our Mysteries are designed exclusively for Captain Montague's by the good Mr. Denham's "Shadow Stalkers" and "Random Acts" Productions. In short, you won't be watching a show; At the Captain's, you'll be in the show, where everything you do will have an effect - and where your next mistake may be your last! Just think of it as acting out the game of "Clue" with more spice, song, and spoof in the mix!
